When it comes to what to wear to a tech conference, smart casual is likely your best bet, such as dark coloured jeans (no rips or holes though) and a semi-smart shirt or t-shirt. Flat shoes may be better than heels, since it's likely you'll be on your feet and moving around the conference space for much of the day.

Are you sure? If you aren't presenting or working while at a conference, I suggest leaving your laptop and bringing only the essentials. However, if you need to bring it, pack smart. Empty everything out of your bag and then pack only the items you'll need during the day.

Associations typically don't pay people to speak at their conferences. Is that right? 'We don't have the budget to pay you' is an excuse frequently heard by those asked to speak at conferences. There's always a budget for caterers, AV, and carpet, yet speakers are often compensated in 'exposure' or travel expenses.

You can certainly choose to accept less, but $1,500 is a good starting point for most speakers. Let's say you're speaking 2 times at an event. You'd charge a flat fee (~$1,500) for one talk and a little more (~$500) per additional talk. Your time and expertise are valuable so you should be charging as such.
